60 Men in 60 Days

60 Men in 60 Days

It's exactly what it sounds like. Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for 60 good men to be a friend, role model, a mentor to 60 good boys and we've given ourselves 60 days to do it.

Why do we need men?

More than 70% of our children waiting for a mentor are boys, but only 3 out of every 10 inquiries to volunteer come from men. Research shows that having the positive influence of a Big Brother makes a real difference in a boy's life. The reality is, so many boys in the Albuquerque metro area could benefit from an additional male figure in their lives. Are you that man?

It's fun and rewarding, and the best part is, you don't need any special skills.

What is mentoring?

A mentor is defined as a "wise advisor". In Big Brothers Big Sisters terms, a mentor is an adult who is there to spend time with a younger person to support their development, provide friendship and guidance, and offer a different perspective on the world. Basically, mentoring is an additional grown-up to be there for a child.

Depending on the program that is right for you, mentors spend time with mentees doing anything related to recreation, education, or social and life skills. Mentoring can take place out in the community or at the student's school.

Mentors provide inspiration, acceptance, challenge, a sympathetic ear and exposure to new ideas and activities. Children matched with mentors show improved:

  • Confidence, self-esteem and a sense of hope
  • Academic grades
  • School attendance
  • Interactions with peer, parents, and teachers
  • Social and communication skills
  • More likely to finish high school and less likely to be involved in criminal activities

What are the benefits?

Studies show that children matched with mentors are:

  • 46% less likely to use drugs
  • 27% less likely to use alcohol
  • 52% less likely to skip school
  • Alumni are 75% more likely than non-alumni to receive a four-year college degree
  • Are ready to become a Big Brother?
