  3. While BBBS-CNM would like to provide a Big Brother or Sister to any child who needs or wants one, we will assess each client on a case-by-case basis to determine eligibility.

The following are the eligibility requirements for the School-based program:

The following are the eligibility requirements for Mentoring Children of Incarcerated Parents (MCIP):

1.    Child must have at least one parent  or guardian who is incarcerated.

The following are the eligibility requirements for Crossroads:

1.    Youth is between the ages of 12-17 years of age.

2.    Youth is willing to maintain a one-year friendship with a volunteer.

Unfortunately, due to a shortage of volunteers, we currently have a waiting list for services. The waiting list for boys is about a year and a half long. There is currently no waiting list for girls. There are certain circumstances in which a child may be moved up on our waiting list. These will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

The following may be some options for your child in the meantime:

  1. Your child may be eligible for a School-based Big Brother or Sister. Click here for information about our School-Based Program. If your child does not attend a school that participates in our School-Based Program, check with your child's school for other programs that may be available to your child.
  2. Consider enrolling your child in recreational activities, an after school program or a tutoring program. Your child's school may be a resource. The local Boys and Girls Club, YMCA and Albuquerque's Parks and Recreation Division may also be options. Community Centers also have after school programs and other recreational opportunities available.  For additional resources please contact United Way of Central New Mexico by dailing 211 or at www.uwcnm.org.
  3. Help recruit volunteers to reduce the waiting list. Anyone can help by:
    • Handing out flyers or brochures
    • Placing an ad in community newsletters
    • Word-of-mouth
    • Speaking to your church, social or recreational group
    • Spreading the word at your workplace through internal email or the company newsletter

If you would like to receive more information and/or materials to help spread the word about Big Brothers Big Sisters, please call 837-9223 or email us.

If you are interested in any of the above programs for your child, please call us at 837-9223. Se habla espanol.

Counselers, teachers, or parties other than a parent or legal guardian cannot refer children for the Community-based program.  If you are a counseler, teacher, or other party, please call our agency and we can talk to you about ways to encourage a parent to enroll their child for mentoring services.
